WHY DO HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS TEAMS POST TO SOCIAL MEDIA?

If you're a coach or booster parent tasked with managing your team's social media, you might feel overwhelmed and ask, “Who started this mess? Why do we need to post all these graphics?” I’ve been there.

When I first started doing this for clients in 2016, fresh out of college, I noticed something unsettling. Many young, talented athletes were no longer playing sports, and it left me wondering how to rekindle that passion. For me, representing my family and community on Friday nights in the fall was an honor. I wanted to bring that sense of pride and purpose back to these kids—even if just a little.

One day, while scrolling through Twitter, I saw colleges posting vibrant, eye-catching graphics. A light bulb went off. I realized that by putting athletes front and center on social media, we could help them feel that what they were doing truly mattered. This approach may not resonate with every athlete, but for many, it can make a world of difference.

There are additional benefits, too:

  • Community Engagement: Eye-catching graphics raise awareness about your team. The more your community sees and follows your content, the more attention your program will receive.

  • Fundraising Opportunities: Your social media profile can become a powerful marketing tool. I often refer to high school social media profiles as "hand-held billboards." By partnering with local businesses and featuring their logos on your graphics, you can create a mutually beneficial fundraising opportunity. Every high school is unique, and I’ve seen 30-40 different methods used in Alabama alone to monetize social media through ad sales.

Ultimately, these graphics are not about keeping up with the Joneses; they’re about doing what’s best for your team. If you lose sight of that, you might end up feeling perpetually behind. Remember to stay true to your team’s values and goals.

I hope this gives you some encouragement and a clear reason for your efforts. Keep pushing forward and do what’s right for your team.
